Rosslyn Chapel, also called the Collegiate Chapel of St. Matthew, is an ornate Roman Catholic church dating back to the 15th Century. After the Scottish Reformation, the Chapel was no longer used for Roman Catholic worship and was closed for public worship until 1861, when it was opened up again under the rites of the Scottish Episcopal Church. An important landmark in Scottish religious history, Rosslyn Chapel is one of the area’s most beautiful monuments, often described as ‘a library in stone’. Explore the Chapel’s carvings, which cover the ceiling of the church and adorn many of the building’s corners and walls, and include the famous ‘Green Men’ carvings which depict human faces surrounded by greenery. Learn more about the Chapel by following a Junior Guide, where local primary school children invite you to a performance and a tour aimed especially at younger visitors. The site of the Chapel also includes a souvenir shop – so no one need go home empty-handed.
